Beyond Rarity

EqD made a fuss over a fraction of the Social Security Administration’s annual baby-names list:

Probably not influenced by ponies, but it’s interesting to see that Rarity is [in] a list of baby names! Though I think Rarity would have something to say to people thinking her name is outrageous.

Of course, the list they consulted contained the names that were reported to SSA the least often. (SSA, in turn, requires five uses of a name before it goes on the public list.) So while we ponder the meaning of seven girls named Rarity born in 2013, you might also consider the eleven named Celestia, the fourteen named Trixie — or the 1,725 named Luna.

(You can get the entire list for the last 130 years or so here.)
