From the “I Know What I Like” files

A Fimfiction user, in the Personal Description segment: “I like my Romance sickening sweet and my Comedy breathtaking hilarious.” Three different bookshelves belonging to this user contain The Sparkle Chronicles. I guess that’s a review right there.

Distant memory

For a couple of years now, I have contended that the single most transcendent work of fiction yet produced by the ponyverse was Background Pony by shortskirtsandexplosions, an epic running 430,000 words, not anywhere near the longest story to come from the fandom, but one of the deepest. The official description: “My name is Lyra Heartstrings, and you will not… (more…)

Canon fodder

The ponyverse as we know it, overwhelmingly huge as it may seem at times, is still pretty small compared to some of those Other Fandoms, though most of them had a substantial head start: G4 began a mere 61 months ago. (If you question that word “mere,” come back when you’ve lived twelve times that long.) Being newish and smallish,… (more…)

As though I had readers or something

We’re only a week into November, and already two EqD Drawfriends have yielded up pictures that could have been, but almost certainly weren’t, suggested by stuff I wrote. The first of them was a now-and-later picture of Twist, the “later” portion of which is about the way I imagined a 52-year-old Twist in The way she used to be, up… (more…)

The way things are today

A thousand readers have now found their way to The way she used to be: I am perhaps overly overjoyed at this, but I think it’s allowed.

A bit of puffery

The very short (2071 words) short story Dead Pony Flying, conceived by me as an antidote to the excesses of The Sparkle Chronicles, earned its one-thousandth reader over this past weekend. I admit to being sort of proud of it: it’s exactly as long as it needs to be, something I can’t always claim, and it’s been fairly well received.

In which I turn out to have been right about something

The entire opening of my story Somepony New is dependent on the grownup Lyra Heartstrings living in Ponyville but coming to Canterlot now and then: she meets up with Desert Brush at the Canterlot train station, sees him going away with Twilight Sparkle, and then duly reporting what she’s seen once she’s back in Ponyville. I owe M. A. Larson… (more…)

Yes, my mountain flower

From the Why Didn’t I Think Of This? files, a My Little Pony/Ulysses crossover. Come to think of it, why didn’t M. A. Larson think of this?

Properly revisionist

That Treehugger business, revisited: Around other ponies, she was Treehugger, the cryptozoologist hippie pony. To her colleagues at the Agency, she was Agent T, tasked with controlling infectious invaders in Equestria. She had managed to gain admittance to the Gala by using her powers of persuasion on an ordinary pony — in fact, a rather weak-minded ordinary pony, if a… (more…)

The question of the ages

The lovely and talented Mindy Kaling served up this semi-zinger last night: Love means never having to say "hey, are we dating?" — Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling) May 22, 2015 You may remember this from Chapter 5 of The Sparkle Chronicles: I shrugged. “Why does any couple fight? So they can make up later.” Her eyes grew wide. “Are we a… (more…)
